Biography

JMBZ is the music performance & recording persona of Jim Boz, an Internationally Acclaimed Award Winning Middle Eastern Dance artist, based in San Diego, CA and Toronto, Canada currently celebrating two decades of involvement in Arabic and related dance arts. As a featured dance workshop instructor, promoter, performer, and competition judge, Jim has shared performances at dance events on 5 continents with his humor, passion, and knowledge. Bringing years of classical and jazz music training, composition, and performance, Jim Boz approaches movement arts with a musical sensibility that allows him to express in concise and clear ideas. His trademark style “American Glam” combines organic Arabic dance movement vocabularies, the excitement of theater, tongue-in-cheek antics, powerfully bold combinations, and contemplative emotional connection.

As a professional musician, Jim has fronted several bands through the 80's and 90's as a guitarist, vocalist, and keyboard player. In the late 1990's, Jim Boz gained a small worldwide following as a solo gothic/industrial artist under the stage name of Fell.Head and as a member of the experimental music duet Tension Factor. He has run his own digital recording studio “Alchemy”, engineering and producing recordings for his and other musical projects.

In 1994, on a dare, Jim began taking classes in 'belly dance', more specifically American Tribal Style belly dance. A short time later after taking up to 6 classes a week from 3 different instructors, Jim began performing Middle Eastern and related dance styles in the Pacific NorthWest solo and with his troupes Lost Ghawazee and Sons of the Padisha. In 1999 he began travelling to teach and share a love of Middle Eastern dance and music. In a little under 15 years, Jim travelled over a million miles, visiting 5 continents teaching, studying, and performing Middle Eastern dance. Jim has been invited to teach and/or perform at some of the world's largest International Middle Eastern dance events.

In 2010, Jim Boz revisited his roots in electronic music by combining them with Middle Eastern rhythms and melodies, creating a signature blend of organic textures and electronic beats across 5 CD's of original "Electronic World Fusion" music, plus two additional CD's of audio tools for dancers & instructors. His music is distributed internationally on iTunes, CDBaby, Amazon, Spotify, and other electronic services, along with his Belly Dance and World Fusion internet radio station Radio Shimmy. Jim's twenty year celebration tour for 2014 includes musical performances in North America and Europe under the name JMBZ.

Press & Reviews

"I LOVE THE MUSIC!!!! This cd really makes you want to move and groove.. you can feel the vibrations moving inside your body as well as outside! Fantastic job.. so looking forward to the next....." - Shut Up and Shimmy Amazon.com Review

"The music is varied and quite good. I was learning a routine to a couple of the songs so I decided to check out the album. Since I like Jim Boz's work, I decided to buy the album instead of just the specific mp3s. No regrets. All the music is good." - Boz in Oz, Amazon.com Review

Best of 2011: Belly Dance Albums and Music - "This album is an interestingly distinct fusion of eastern and western rhythms and elements with a definite electronic feel. It’s very powerful, and there’s a nice mix of slower and faster songs." - Ananke www.AnankeDance.com

I have only had the pleasure of dancing with Jim once, but it was amazing! He orchestrated an amazing set of live electronic music for several dancers. We had not heard the music before, but he worked with the group to create an amazing show and dance experience. It was truly a musical "conversation." He is a creative artist, knowledgable and understanding workshop instructor, and seemingly fun and open person. I hope to have more opportunities to learn from him and dance to his music. - Rose, Grand Rapids, MI
